Vegetable stocks gutted in market

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: Several vendors of Unit-I market of the capital city lost their vegetable stocks and money as their sheds were gutted on Thursday.

The fire broke out in the wee hours of Thursday and soon engulfed about 80 sheds in the periphery of Unit-I market. The vendors stocked additional vegetables in view of cyclone alert.

Fire tenders took three hours to put out the fire and prevent it from spreading to central market. “I have lost everything. In view of cyclone, I had put all my money in the business. All vegetable stocks were damaged in fire and I could not retrieve anything,” Nirakar Sahoo, a vendor, said.

Capital Police Station personnel said the fire could have originated from mosquito coil or short-circuit. In the process, two cooking-gas cylinders exploded making the matter worse.
