ALAPPUZHA: The State Government has decided to revive 63 taluk-level Land Boards across the State to decide on land cases, especially those related to surplus land. The government order in this regard has already been issued. Announcing this here on Thursday, Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran said the decision to revive these boards was taken following widespread complaints over the misuse, encroachment and sale of surplus land in the State. The ongoing controversy over the sale of 154 acre of surplus land in the R-Block of Kuttanad was also among one of these complaints, he said. Talking to reporters, Mr. Rajendran said the government would appoint lawyers to fight the cases, which were quite large in number, and try out all legally possible methods to reclaim the surplus land and to hand them over to the deserving. A list of the cases and a database of surplus land has been prepared for the purpose. Summary trials at each of these Land Boards would begin in December and would be conducted on a regular basis, the Minister said, pointing out that the Land Boards were hitherto non-operational to a great extent. “There are Land Boards that have conducted only three sittings in the last five years and some which have had only a couple of sittings in the last 10 years. We will change that and ensure that trials are held on a regular basis,” he said.
