Pampa: Devaswom Minister G. Sudhakaran has said that various government departments and the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) have made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the annual Mandalam-Makaravilakku festival at Sabarimala beginning Saturday. Mr. Sudhakaran was addressing a high-level meeting held at Pampa on the foothills of Sabarimala on Thursday. He said the neighbouring States of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka had expressed their readiness to operate 60 more inter-State bus services to Kerala during the two-month season. Chief police coordinator and Additional Director-General of Police R. Rajeevan said the police had chalked out a scheme for effective crowd management at the pilgrim centre. However, the TDB is yet to supply the electronic gadgets sought by the Police Department for strengthening the security surveillance at Sabarimala. Mr. Rajeevan said that 3,000 police personnel would be deployed at Sabarimala during the last lap of the Makaravilakku festival. TDB president C.K. Gupthan said the Board had tried its level best to provide maximum pilgrim facilities at Sabarimala. The Board would see to it that more pilgrim facilities would be provided at the centre by the next pilgrim season. State Pollution Control Board chairman Rajamohan proposed that the TDB appoint an environmental nodal officer for Sabarimala. Pathanamthitta Collector Raju Narayanaswamy said the Sabarimala Sanitation Society had deployed 525 sanitation workers in Sabarimala.
