‘Cockroach is the cause in 25 per cent of asthma cases’
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: Twenty-six per cent of children aged below 18 in Bangalore suffer from asthma, the causes varying from air pollution to pets and cockroaches, H. Paramesh, director of Lakeside Medical Centre and Hospital, has said.
Dr. Paramesh said at a press conference that 75 per cent of children who suffered from asthma develop the disease when they were five.
Air pollution was the major cause for asthma in all cities, including Bangalore, and the incidence of asthma had risen from around 9 per cent in 1979 to 26 per cent in 2004.
Dr. Paramesh has conducted a study from 1979 to 2004 on environmental changes leading to respiratory problems in Indian cities.
In Bangalore, Dr. Paramesh said, data showed that only 11.5 per cent of schoolchildren studying in low traffic density areas suffered from asthma while the number went up to 34 per cent among children who studied in high traffic density areas and were from lower economic background.
Interestingly, 25 per cent of the cause for asthma was because of cockroaches while only 7.5 per cent of asthma cases could be traced back to pollen and fungi in the city, Dr. Paramesh said.
He advised against the use of mosquito coils.
“It releases polluting elements that is equal to smoke from anywhere between 75 to 130 cigarettes,” he said.
As opposed to the prevailing myth that pets caused asthma, Dr. Paramesh said 5 per cent of asthma cases could be traced to cats and dogs.
Advocating inhalation therapy, Dr. Paramesh said that in this method the medicine was taken directly to the lungs and caused Fewer side effects.
