Lokayukta joins hands with IT Department

BANGALORE: In a significant development, the Lokayukta has joined hands with the Income Tax Department for investigations into disproportionate assets of government officials.
D. Shankar, Commissioner of Income Tax-5 and Neeraj Vinay Bansal, Commissioner of Income Tax-3, held a two-hour discussion with Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde. During the meeting, the two departments agreed to exchange information on unearthing income earned through illegal and unlawful activities and cases of disproportionate assets and undeclared financial transactions.
Mr. Hegde said the IT Department officials came forward to hold discussions following the recent search by the Lokayukta police of the premises of seven police officers, five Transport Department officers and an Irrigation Department official in Bangalore, Bellary and Bidar. The IT Department officials also wanted to exchange information about the search conducted in Bangalore and Bellary.
Terming the discussions as fruitful, Mr. Hegde said the IT department will help the Lokayukta police in consolidating evidence on the ‘benami’ assets of government employees. “There will be a regular channel between the two institutions,” Mr. Hegde said. He said Lokayukta had exchanged information earlier only in specific cases.
