Listing priorities: Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy addressing the people after inaugurating a new Government Engineering College in Karaikal on Thursday. KARAIKAL: The Puducherry government is according priority to higher education to help the students in rural and urban areas, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has said. He was speaking at the inauguration of Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Institute of Engineering and Technology (PKIET), a government engineering college on the old campus of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture (PAJANCOA) at Serumavilangai here on Thursday. Mr. Rangasamy said the college was temporarily located on PAJANCOA campus and it would be shifted to a new building in due course. Three B.Tech courses - electronics and communications engineering, information technology and computer science - had been introduced in the college this year with a total intake of 180 students at the rate of 60 in each course. The candidates who were selected earlier by the Central Administrative Committee through counselling were given admission. On laying of a new broad gauge rail link between Nagore and Karaikal, Mr. Rangasamy said the Centre had given its nod to grant Rs.53 crore for the Rs. 66-crore project and the work would be taken up soon by the railways. Mr. Rangasamy said the Puducherry government had sanctioned Rs.24 crore in the first phase for establishing the Rs.50-crore super specialty hospital in Karaikal and the work would begin soon. A special economic zone would be established in T.R.Pattinam in Karaikal district in the existing industrial growth centre area. The preliminary work would start soon, the Chief Minister said.
