TIRUCHI: The Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU) general secretary N. Kanniah on Thursday said that if the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission, constituted in October 2006, were not submitted to the union government before March the union would serve notice calling for an indefinite strike from April 1. Speaking to reporters here, Mr. Kanniah said the Centre should implement before March all the other demands agreed by it during a meeting with the All India Railwaymen Federation last year including payment of interim relief of Rs. 1,000 per month to all railwaymen, reduction of working hours in respect of loco pilots, cancellation of Running Allowance Committee, stoppage of reduction of labour and removal of anomalies that arose out of the Fifth Central Pay Commission. Though the Centre had agreed to implement the demands, it had not done so till now, he said. Secret ballot electionMr. Kanniah said a secret ballot election would be held on November 26, 27 and 28 to enable railwaymen across the country to select a union of their choice in the respective zonal railways for the purpose of granting recognition to them. In Southern Railway alone, one lakh employees would exercise their franchise in the secret ballot which would be held in various locations to elect their true representative, he added.
