TIRUCHI: Students of K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College on Thursday went on a token strike protesting against recent announcement of the Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss on tabling the Bill favouring compulsory rural service for the medical students.

Took out rally

About 500 students, including undergraduates and house surgeons, took out a rally from K. A. P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital to the College, raising slogans against Ministry’s reported move to table the Bill on compulsory rural service for medical students thereby extending MBBS course to six-and-half years.

Representatives from the Tamil Nadu Medical Students and House Surgeons Association, Tiruchi, said that Minister had taken this decision even before the committee, headed by Sambasiva Rao, submitted its recommendations.

Demand for public debate

The Association has demanded for a public debate and medical students’ feedback before the final decision was taken. Representatives from the medical colleges across the State would meet on Saturday at Chennai to chart their further course of action.
