Anti-filariasis campaign launched

Preventive action: Health department officials distributing Diethylcarbamazine tablets to prevent Filsriasis to a family in Mangalore on Thursday.

MANGALORE: Health officials, nursing students, anganawadi workers, and representatives of voluntary organisations, joined hands for a door-to-door distribution of Diethylcarbamazine tablets to prevent filariasis or elephantiasis in Mangalore, Bantwal, and Puttur taluks in Dakshina Kannada district on Thursday.

According to H. Jagannath, district Health and Family Welfare Officer, 52.5 per cent of the houses were covered in the three taluks. The achievement on day one in Puttur stood at 63 per cent and Bantwal 47 per cent. In Mangalore urban area, 49 per cent of the houses were covered and Mangalore Rural 53.7 per cent.

The campaign will continue on Friday and Saturday, Mr. Jagannath added.

Under Mangalore City Corporation limits, the tablets were distributed in 11 wards. They were: Katipalla Krishnapura, Katipalla North, Idya East, Idya West, Hosabettu, Kulai, Baikampady, Panambur Bengre, Panjimogaru, Kunjathabail North and Thiruvail wards. According to Raghunath, assistant health officer of the corporation and in-charge of the campaign here, nursing students from Karavali Nursing College, Unity Nursing College, and Athena Nursing College, joined them in distributing the tablets. In addition, 42 volunteers of self help groups formed under “Swarna Jayanthi Rozgar Yojana” also joined the campaign, he said.

Mr. Raghunath said that four fresh cases of filariasis had been reported in the city limits last year. Following this, an anti-filariasis campaign was launched in July by distributing the tablets.

Filariasis cases had been reported from Bokkapatna, Bengre, and Bolur areas, he said. The campaign will continue till Saturday, he added.
