ANANTAPUR: A shepherd was killed and nine others injured when a bear attacked them in Kurakulapalli village of Kambadur mandal in the district in the wee hours of Thursday. Five seriously injured persons were rushed to the general hospital here and the other four sustained minor injuries. According to the information reaching here, several shepherds who were sleeping at the temporary shelters housing the sheep on the fringes of the villages were attacked by a bear which strayed into the habitation from the nearby shrub forest. The shepherds woke up to some sound from herds and began searching the area with the help of torch lights. Suddenly a bear pounced on them and started attacking them with its paws. Futile efforts Their efforts to shout it away proved futile and by the time they scrambled for sticks to attack it, several were injured. On hearing the hue raised by the shepherds, the villagers rushed to the spot and chased the animal away. Shivappa (30) died on the spot. The injured were rushed to the government hospital at Kalyanadurg first. Five persons, who sustained serious wounds, were referred to the general hospital here, where their condition was stated to be out of danger. Forest officials and the police visited the village in the morning and registered a case.
