No ultimatum from Gowda: Rajnath

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: BJP president Rajnath Singh on Thursday denied that Janata Dal (Secular) president H.D. Deve Gowda had issued any ultimatum to his party to accept certain conditions in return for the JD (S) support to the Yeddyurappa government in Karnataka.

Mr. Singh was responding to questions about agency reports that Mr. Gowda, who was here on Thursday, had issued a fresh “ultimatum” demanding acceptance of certain conditions while saying the support of the JD (S) should not be taken for granted. Mr. Singh said neither Mr. Gowda met him nor did they talk on the phone, and there was absolutely no question of any ultimatum being issued.

Speaking to The Hindu in Bangalore, Mr. Gowda also said he had neither spoken to nor met Mr. Singh. He denied the report that he issued an “ultimatum.”

On Wednesday, the former Chief Minister and Mr. Gowda’s son, H.D. Kumaraswamy, told The Hindu in Bangalore that differences between the two partners were sorted out and the JD (S) would join the new government.
