Assam and Karnataka score big wins Stephen’s three goals steers Karnataka to win over Chhattisgarh GURGAON: Assam and Karnataka scored big wins to light up the second day, but the icing on the cake was a five-in-a-row by Jharkhand’s Abhishek Das in the 44th junior National football championship for the B.C. Roy Trophy here on Thursday. Abhishek struck early for the defending champion Jharkhand against Tripura. He scored the second goal in the 39th minute before slotting in three in the second half. S.K. Mostakin struck in the 82nd minute to complete the tally in the Cluster III league match at the Devi Lal Stadium here. A. Phukan and Naba Kantha scored three goals apiece as Assam defeated Himachal Pradesh 9-0 in a Cluster IV match. Phukan opened the scoring in the 23rd minute and reeled out next two in 10 minutes as Assam took 5-0 half-time lead. Naba Kantha scored two minutes from the break and then struck in the 65th and 86th minutes leaving Himachal defence in disarray. Sibra Majary scored two and Maneshwar struck one. At Faridabad, V. Stephen’s three second-half goals steered Karnataka to 8-0 win over Chhattisgarh in the Cluster VIII tie. In other matches, Manipur defeated Chandigarh 3-0, Meghalaya beat Goa 3-1. and Orissa edged past Uttar Pradesh 1-0 through Surender Mohan Majhi’s 59th-minute strike. The results: Assam 9 (A. Phukan 23, 25, 33, Sibra Majary 28, 73, Naba Kantha 43, 65th, 86, Maneshwar 83) bt Himachal Pradesh 0; Jharkhand 6 (Abhishek Das 7, 39, 53, 57, 72, S. K. Mostakin 82) bt Tripura; Karnataka 8 (Krishan Kumar 8, Satish Kumar 10, 39, V. Stephen 59, 60, 90, V. Krishan Kumar 63, 77) bt Chhattisgarh 0; Manipur 3 (Jogeshwar Singh 24, Hoalengon 63, 86th) bt Chandigarh 0; Meghalaya 3 (Timmy 8, 59, Eueenson 48) bt Goa 1 (C. Cardozo 73rd); Orissa 1 (Surender Mohan Majhi 59) bt Uttar Pradesh 0.
