Married three claiming to be an IRS officer

HYDERABAD: A 46-year-old man, who allegedly married three women by claiming to be an IRS officer and doctor before disappearing with their gold jewellery, was taken into custody, Jeedimetla police said on Thursday.

Investigations revealed that the arrested man, Jandhyala Venkata Subrahmanya Hanumantha Shastri, was earlier convicted for trying to dupe an industrialist by posing to be an IAS officer.

In another case, he collected money from the family of a girl posing to be a cardiac surgeon.

His bluff was called after he made small incisions on the girl’s chest and tried to convince her parents that he had conducted the cardiac surgery. Her parents lodged a complaint with the Patamata police in Vijayawada in 2005.

He was sentenced to two years’ rigorous imprisonment in the case. The High Court later confirmed six months’ imprisonment but he moved the Supreme Court in appeal which is pending.

Police said Shastri was also accused of duping several persons in Nizamabad by donning the role of a doctor. The woman had earlier given an advertisement seeking an alliance.

Her family received a phone call from a person who identified himself as a senior IAS officer from Delhi, who claimed that his relative Shastri, a ‘cardiologist’ was interested in marrying her and gave his contact number.

“Our investigation revealed that Shastri had himself called the family members posing to be the IAS officer. He ran away with her jewellery and other valuables soon after marrying her in June last,” Inspector B. Srinivas Reddy said.
