No sitting today
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day on Thursday, opening day of the winter session, without transacting any business as a mark of respect for two sitting members who died recently. Obituary references were made to six former members also.
The sitting members who died during the inter-session period are Vijay Kumar Khandelwal of the Bharatiya Janata Party, representing Betul in the Lok Sabha, and the former BJP president Jana Krishnamurthy, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat.
Krishnamurthy, who served as Law and Justice Minister in the previous NDA government, would be remembered as an able parliamentarian, noted lawyer and distinguished social worker, said Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari. The 80-year-old founder member of the BJP, who had been ailing for some time, died on September 25 in Chennai.
Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha have cancelled their sittings for Friday on account of Chhath Puja, a popular festival in parts of the north.
