Bara Hindu Rao resident doctors call off strike

Staff Reporter

Adequate security for physicians assured by hospital

Strike took place after a resident doctor was manhandled by the relatives of a patient

Staff of five major Delhi Government hospitals stayed away from work

NEW DELHI: Resident doctors at Bara Hindu Rao Hospital here called off their 24-hour-old strike on Thursday morning after the hospital authorities assured them that adequate security would be provided to physicians.

The doctors had proceeded on strike after a resident doctor at the hospital was manhandled by the relatives of a patient who had died earlier this week.

“We want to state that there has been no negligence on the part of our doctors. The patient who had died was very ill and came to us in a critical condition. My doctors were manhandled and it is understandable that they are agitated about it. We have spoken to the doctors and assured them that all measures would be taken to ensure a good work environment,” said Bara Hindu Rao Medical Superintendent R. B. Mittal.

Meanwhile, Group C and D staff of five major Delhi Government hospitals including Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan, G.B. Pant, Guru Nanak Eye Centre and Maulana Azad Medical Centre stayed away from work on Thursday morning till 12 noon protesting against “the Government’s high-handedness”. The token strike by the group had been organised to “remind the Government about their promise to fill up all vacant posts in various hospitals and look into the other demands of the workers”.

“Last time we had gone on strike the Government had assured us that all our demands would be looked into within the next three months. However, despite their claims about serious efforts no results are visible yet. We are also warning the Government that in case the situation does not change we will go on a 24-hour strike on November 27 starting from 6 a.m. onwards,” said Group C and D Union member Raj Kumar.
