A theatre festival, a rock show, a debate on the cards

Admit One 2007 will begin on Monday

Teams from Pakistan, Sri Lanka coming

BANGALORE: Theatre buffs in Bangalore can look forward to Admit One 2007, the three-day annual theatre festival of the National Law School of India, which will take place from November 19, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Alliance Francaise.

The Hindu is the media partner for the festival as well as for events such as the NLS Parliamentary Debate and the rock show, Strawberry Fields. This year’s edition of Admit One celebrates diverse cultural expressions and manifestations and features 21 plays, including teams from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, MCC Chennai and St. Stephens, Delhi. The festival will be inaugurated by dancer Mallika Sarabai. The inaugural play will be Colour Wheel Productions’ “Why Not Why?”, by a group of children who have not let hearing disabilities come in the way of their self expression. It is inspired by Mahasweta Devi’s “Why, Why Girl” and narrates the story of a little girl and her endless quest for answers. The performance is a culmination of a three-month long workshop conducted by Masrah, a local theatre group

The NLS Parliamentary Debate and the rock show Strawberry Fields will act as a lever to attract talent. More than 20 teams have registered, and the competition is sure to be stiff especially as the prize money on offer is Rs. 50,000 for the winning teams. On the judging panel will be Bimal Desai and Vivek Madan, among others. Chief guests at the festival will include theatre personality Arundhati Nag, actor Chaitra Hallikari and dancer Parul Shastri.

In keeping with National Law School of India’s tradition of engaging with social issues in an innovative way, its Legal Services Clinic will present a play, “An Informed Love”, one in a series of many on legal awareness the law school regularly performs at children’s homes and villages around Bangalore city, weaving pertinent socio-legal issues such as marriage, right to information, dowry and cruelty into the frame of a love story.
