All eyes on Meghalaya

NEW DELHI: One of the youngest States of the country, Meghalaya is the “Focus State” at the ongoing India International Trade Fair at Pragati Maidan here.

In keeping with the theme of the IITF this year, the North-East State is showcasing its potential in the field of processed food and agro-industries. Producer of a substantial quantity of oranges, pineapples, peaches, pears, plums, guavas and bananas, Meghalaya has put up fruit juices, jams and jellies of different fruits in its stalls.

Its turmeric, particularly the “Lakadong” variety, is reckoned to be the best in the world. And this time turmeric powder from Jaintia Hills is being showcased. Products related to horticulture and floriculture are also on display.

Helen Giri, a retired professor from the North Eastern Hills University, Shillong, is showcasing “duritara”, male drum and other interesting items. “Our culture is dwindling and I want to preserve our traditional craft. I have overcome the physical challenge of bringing these items. At my traditional production centre in Shillong, 15 young women and 10 physically challenged boys work,” he says. Another speciality, glutinous rice, which is considered very nourishing is being sold as a snack rather than as a staple food. The ubiquitous red rice is also available at the stalls. For decoration purpose there are colourful artificial flowers, natural flowers made of bamboo and wild chestnuts. “We are displaying Kara’s honey from pure silk,” said Ms. Giri.
