“Mahila desks at police stations soon”

Staff Reporter

Workshop conducted for women constables

PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has said that ‘mahila’ desks with women police constables who are trained to handle issues pertaining to family problems would soon be started in all police stations in the Union Territory.

He was speaking at the inauguration of a workshop on the art of counselling for women constables who are under training here on Wednesday.

Mr. Rangasamy said the government was doing its best to provide economic independence to women, which would thereby empower them, besides helping them become self-sufficient.

Social Welfare M. Kandasamy said police should take immediate action on anti-socials. They should not be intimidated by political pressure. He urged the Women’s Commission to be more active and solve more cases.

Senior Superintendent of Police Chhaya Sharma asked the women constables to be sympathetic to the women who approached them, be impartial, understand problems and then provide a solution. She also requested the government to appoint probation officers and set a system in place for the Domestic Violence Act.

Chairperson of the commission Kamalini said the workshop taught the constables the process of counselling, how to create confidence among the public and how to behave with those who approached them. D. Ramabathiran, member secretary, Union Territory of Pondicherry, Legal Services Authority, suggested that such training in the art of counselling should be provided to all government staff. Guru Bharathi and Kannan from the Madurai Institute of Social Sciences, Madurai, were the resource persons.
