Vatal seeks help for theatre artistes
Special Correspondent
Convention of artistes to be held next month Programme to revive professional theatre sought
Bangalore: The Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha will hold a two-day State-level convention of professional theatre artistes here on December 1 and 2.
Party president Vatal Nagaraj, MLA, told presspersons on Friday that the convention would discuss the problems and challenges facing professional theatre and those who depend on it for their livelihood.
The convention would submit a memorandum to the Government seeking an annual subsidy of Rs. 5 lakh for all active professional theatres on the lines of the subsidy being given to Kannada cinema. They should also get a grant of Rs. 10,000 for each play staged in rural areas.
Mr. Nagaraj said the Government should implement a comprehensive programme to support and revive professional theatres.
Referring to the waning importance of Kannada in Bangalore, Mr. Nagaraj said that it was the responsibility of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike to ensure the development of Kannada in the city. It should implement programmes for the development of the language in all wards. If it failed to respond to the demand within a fortnight, his party would lay siege to the BBMP office, Mr. Nagaraj warned.
