KOLAR: Hundreds of Dalits under the banner of Kolar and Chickballapur district units of Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS) staged a demonstration in front of Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Friday demanding re-trial of Kambalapalli and Nagalapalli Dalit carnage cases. Defying prohibitory orders, DSS activists, including large number of women, hailing from both the districts staged a dharna raising slogans in support of their demand. Several activists sang songs reflecting the plight of socially downtrodden people, filling inspiration among protestors. While seven Dalits were burnt alive in Kambalapalli, a Dalit woman and her two sons were brutally hacked to death some years ago. All the accused in both the cases have been acquitted by Kolar district court for failure of prosecution to prove the charges against accused. Expressing anguish over acquittal of the accused in these cases, the DSS urged government to transfer the cases to outside the State in order to provide justice to Dalits. Criticising the failure of police and Social Welfare Departments to give protection to the witnesses in these cases, DSS State convenor N. Venkatesh announced that the organisation would launch jail bharo agitation and stage a dharna in front of the Chief Minister’s residence if their demands were not conceded.
