‘Sports Medcon 2007’ inaugurated

NEW DELHI: The Lt Governor of Delhi, Tejendra Khanna, inaugurated the three-day National conference on sports medicine, ‘Sports Medcon 2007’ at the SCOPE Convention Centre here on Friday and urged the delegates to maintain a high level of professional and ethical standards.

Speakers at the inaugural session stressed the importance of wrong training methods leading to injuries of sportspersons while Dr. Manmohan Singh, Chairman, Medical and Anti Doping Commission, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) suggested that at least a chapter be included on doping in sports in the medical curriculum so that all the doctors are made aware of prohibited substance and methods in sports.

Scientific way

Mr. Khanna pointed out the need to have a more scientific way of grooming sportspersons, especially keeping in mind the most diverse genetic pool that the country had.

Dr. (Lt. Gen) Yogendra Singh, a triple jumper in his prime and now the Director-General of Armed Forces Medical Services, recalled the faulty training methods that had contributed to the lumbago that former National record holder in hammer throw, Praveen Kumar, had suffered from.

He also cautioned that yoga, if over done, could become counter productive in sports from a long-term perspective.

Mr. K. P. Singh Deo, Chairman, Sports Commission, IOA, called for highest ethical standards among the sports medicine experts and urged them to keep in mind the harmful effects of drugs while utilizing the beneficial aspects of sports sciences.

Sports sciences had become very important part of sports and the National Institute of Sports, Patiala, was in the process of upgrading its sports medicine course, said the Director General of Sports Authority of India (SAI), Ratan Watal.

In his welcome address, President of the Indian Federation of Sports Medicine Dr. P. S. M. Chandran, said that the conference would try to get a feedback from delegates about how to provide scientific support to our sportspersons gearing up for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, keeping in mind the need to have drug-free sports, the main theme of the conference.

Double for Shweta

Shweta Chandra Rana started on the wrong foot, but recovered very well to win a double crown in the Good Earth AITA Super Series junior tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Friday.

Shweta, with a stout heart and a strong will to fight it out, beat Vaniya Dangwal in both the finals, albeit in contrasting style.

In the under-14 final, Shweta dropped the first set, but lost only three more games in winning the next two sets and the crown.

Later, she was equally authoritative despite erring with her attacking shots to win in straight sets against an opponent who had distinctly lost confidence in her abilities.

The other player to feature in both the finals in the boys’ section, Digvijay Singh, was not that efficient in handling his two matches.

The player from Himachal Pradesh lost the under-14 final to Ronit Bisht in three sets after winning the first set, but he did not lose heart as he beat Samip Mehta of Gujarat in straight sets later in the day.

The results (all finals):

Boys: U-16: Digivijay Singh bt Samip Mehta 6-3, 6-3.

U-14: Ronit Bisht bt Digvijay Singh 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Girls: U-16: Shweta Rana bt Vaniya Dangwal 6-3, 6-4.

U-14: Shweta Rana bt Vaniya Dangwal 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. — Special Correspondent
