Mohanti accused of helping his son jump parole His son was convicted of raping a German scholar BHUBANESWAR: A day after a Rajasthan court declared Orissa’s suspended Director-General of Police (Fire Service) B.B. Mohanti an absconder, the State Government on Friday said it made every possible efforts to trace him, but in vain. The top cop was accused of helping his son Bitihotra, who was convicted for raping a German scholar, jump parole and himself evading police arrest. Replying to queries on the whereabouts of the suspended DGP, Home Secretary Tarun Kanti Mishra said: “The State police have done everything possible and in spite of all our efforts we have not been able to locate him. Officers have gone to Ranchi, other parts of Bihar, West Bengal, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Delhi looking for him.” “Police teams also visited a number of places in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and other parts of Orissa. We searched for months but unfortunately we have not been successful,” Mr. Mishra said. Stating that the State Government was yet to receive the latest Rajasthan court order, the Home Secretary said: “Once we go through the court order, we will be doing everything what the court requires us to do. There will be no let-up on our part.” When asked whether Bitihotra had escaped abroad, Mr. Mishra said: “I have no idea.” The Rajasthan police had registered a case against B.B. Mohanti early this year for allegedly concealing facts relating to his absconded son. Though on several occasions, the police team from Rajasthan came searching for Mohanti, he used to go underground. The top cop also evaded non-bailable warrant in the month of August following which the Orissa Government suspended him from his services. His son Bitihotra was handed over seven years jail sentence by an Alwar fast-track court for raping a German scholar last year. He jumped parole in December last.
