Anantapur
Seeking justice: Farmers attending an all-party meet seeking support price for groundnut in Anantapur on Friday. ANANTAPUR: An all-party farmers’ unions action committee meeting held here on Friday alleged that the State and Central Governments are neglecting groundnut farmers, though it is a major oilseed crop in the country. The meeting also demanded a support price of Rs. 3,000 per quintal for groundnut. They said that the crop is cultivated in more than 20 lakh acres in the district but farmers are not getting the support price even after getting good yield this year. Nothing less than Rs. 3,000 per quintal for the crop will be remunerative to farmers, keeping in mind the high input costs, they said. Alleging that the State and Central Governments are neglecting groundnut farmers, they urged the legislators of all parties to take up a debate on the support price for groundnut in the Assembly and exert pressure on the Prime Minister to hike the support price to Rs. 3,000. They also decided to organise district bandh on November 21 in support of their demand. They also urged the Government create a special fund for groundnut farmers to help them when the market price of production is less than remunerative. Further, the ryots demanded waiver interest on all crop loans and compensation to farmers who suffered crop loss this season due to excessive rain during the harvesting stage.
