Man jailed for power theft

A fine of Rs. 3.53 lakh also imposed

NEW DELHI: A special court for electricity-related cases at Patparganj in East Delhi has sentenced a businessman to 14 days’ imprisonment for stealing electricity. Omvir was caught stealing 15 KW of electricity by bypassing the meter and hooking from the nearby BSES LV mains.

The special court also imposed a fine of Rs.3.53 lakh on Omvir. According to BSES officials, Omvir was caught stealing 15 KW of power electricity at his commercial establishment-cum-residence in East Arjun Nagar by a BYPL enforcement team on September 22 last year.

“The electricity meter was found disconnected and Omvir was indulging in direct theft of electricity by hooking on to the nearby BSES LV Mains. The stolen electricity was being used for both commercial and domestic purposes,” BSES officials said.

Under the Indian Electricity Act, 2003, a penalty of Rs.3.53 lakh was imposed on the accused. When he failed to deposit the penalty amount till the stipulated date, an FIR was lodged at the local police station. The accused was then arrested and produced before the special court.

“Thus far BSES has filed over 6,500 cases in the three special courts in their area and have sent over 210 power thieves to jail,” the discom said.
