Using good offices: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy with Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil in New Delhi on Friday. NEW DELHI: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy met Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Friday and sought release of Rs. 100 crore from the National Calamity Contingency Fund to provide relief to those affected by the recent floods in the State. In the Capital to attend the All India Congress Committee meeting on Saturday, the Chief Minister’s response to media queries on the demand by some Dalit groups for greater share in power was: “My Cabinet has the highest representation for Backward Classes and weaker sections, and they have been given the best portfolios unlike any other previous Cabinet of the State.” About the disruption of Assembly proceedings, Dr. Reddy said it was a manifestation of the frustration in the ranks of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) which had hoped to see dissidence raise its head within the Congress and thereby force frequent changes of Chief Ministers. Asserting that the Congress Government was providing the State a good administration, he said the success of the current dispensation was frustrating all the hopes of the TDP. Asked to react on the Rs. 50 bonus announced for paddy, the Chief Minister said the State Government would continue to press for a higher support price for all crops. However, he admitted disappointment; stating that it would have been better if the bonus was Rs. 100. And, to ensure that the higher bonus reaches farmers, Dr. Reddy said he had given instructions this morning to ensure this.
