Attack on Haj pilgrims criticised

Staff Reporter

KANNUR: Communist Marxist Party (CMP) leader M.V. Raghavan has said that the attack by Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M) workers on vehicles carrying Haj pilgrims at Kadavathur here on Tuesday was deplorable as it has exposed the CPI(M)’s claims of being a secular party.

Mr. Raghavan said at a press conference here on Friday that the CPI(M) leadership was trying to intimidate the minority communities just as “(Gujarat Chief Minister) Narendra Modi had done in Gujarat.” Attack on pilgrims was unheard of in the State, he said adding that even the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh workers had never stopped vehicles carrying Haj pilgrims in the past.

Denial

The CMP leader said that CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan’s denial that no CPI(M) worker had been involved in the incidents at Kadavathur on November 13 night contradicted the arrest of CPI(M) workers in connection with the incidents.

The police had not taken up the issue with the seriousness it deserved other than registering a case, he said.

The incident was a shame for the State, he added.
