CHANDIGARH: A State-wide Cleanliness Week will be observed from January 17, 2008, in all the villages of Haryana under a “Total Sanitation Campaign” for creating awareness among the people of rural areas to lead a healthy life by way of cleanliness. Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary (Development and Panchayats) Urvashi Gulati said here on Thursday that since the Total Sanitation Campaign was a community participation campaign, panchayats and villagers must play a vital and prominent role in its successful implementation. Debates, painting and quiz competitions will be organised for the school children under the campaign. Individual toilets will be constructed in villages to make the State completely free of open defecation. Efforts will be made for the management of solid waste and dirty water. A two-day workshop of Additional Deputy Commissioners of all the districts and coordination officers of the Total Sanitation Campaign will also be organised in Chandigarh on January 10 and 11 with the assistance of the World Bank to improve their efficiency. Ms. Gulati said a training programme was being organised for the benefit of workers of the implementing agencies of this programme by the Development and Panchayats Department in association with the World Bank. A total of 800 trainers from 15 districts have been imparted training so far. Training programmeA five-day training programme will be launched in Ambala district from November 26 to 30 and in Mewat district from December 3 to 7. A one-day training programme will be conducted in Mahendergarh district on December 8 this year. Meanwhile, addressing a meeting here, she said the Government had allocated about Rs.770 crores for development works to strengthen the rural infrastructure during the last 32 months. Out of this total allocated amount, about Rs.320 crores has been released and Rs.299 crores spent up to October 31. This amount had been allocated for the announcements made by the Chief Minister under various rural development schemes.
