Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda presenting the “Shri Satpal Saini Shrestha Patrakarita Puruskar’ to Hemant Atri of Dainik Bhaskar in Chandigarh on Friday. CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Friday announced institution of new State and district level cash awards totalling Rs.37 lakh for excellence in journalism. These will be in addition to the two existing State level awards. Speaking after giving away the two State awards instituted by the Haryana Government and five Veer Yagya Dutt Sharma Memorial Awards on behalf of the Chandigarh Press Club at a function here on the occasion of National Press Day, Mr. Hooda announced that two awards would be given, one to a cameraman from the electronic media and the other to a photographer from the print media, while three awards would be given to reporters from the electronic media. The topics of coverage would be development, culture and “sadbhavna” (goodwill and harmony). The Chief Minister said six other awards would be given to journalists from the print media. These would be for coverage ranging from promotion of “sadbhavna”, development, rural development and social issues to investigative and analytical reporting. Each State level award would carry Rs.51,000, a certificate of appreciation, a shawl and a memento. Mr. Hooda said there would be seven district level awards of Rs.21,000 each to be conferred upon media persons every year in each district. Each award winner would also get a certificate of appreciation, a shawl and a memento. These awards would be given in the areas of `sadbhavna’, social issues, development, investigative reporting, analytical reporting, rural development and photography. Mr. Hooda highlighted the role of the Press during the Indian freedom struggle and said it had also strengthened Indians democracy and kept the country united despite cultural and geographical diversities. He conferred the Shri Satpal Saini Smriti Sreshtha Patrakarita Puruskar on Hemant Atri of Dainik Bhaskar for his feature highlighting the issue of female foeticide and immense potential of girls to excel in life. He also conferred the Shri Rajender Hooda Samriti Navodit Sreshtha Patrakarita Puruskar on Geetanjali Gayatri of The Tribune for her news report, ”Admissions in Government Primary Schools at all time low” and its impact story, “No Birth Certificate for Haryana School Admission”. Each award carries Rs.1 lakh in cash, a shawl, a book, a certificate and a memento. The Chief Minister also gave away the Veer Yagya Dutt Sharma Memorial Awards in different categories. He also gave a cheque for Rs.25 lakh to the Chandigarh Press Club.
