ALAPPUZHA: With a controversy over alleged irregularities in the sale of 154 acres of surplus land in the R-Block of Kuttanad showing no signs of subsiding, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) district committee has appointed an inquiry commission to inquire into the alleged involvement of party members in the deal. According to party sources, the district committee that met recently has appointed senior members S. Bahuleyan, K.R. Bhageerathan and D. Manichen to probe into the sale that was carried out by the Kuttamangalam Service Cooperative Bank, which has over the years been ruled by the CPI(M). The Cooperation Department too had conducted enquiries into the issue and found that the deal was “entirely legal” and carried out with the permission of the government when the United Democratic Front was in power. However, the ethical issue of CPI (M) members being part of the sale of surplus land, which was handed over to landless farmers through a struggle spearheaded by the CPI (M) itself in the 1970s has now prompted the internal inquiry, party sources added.
