Collector orders DNA test for new-borns, parents

Staff Reporter

Tussle over parenthood of new-born girl

Baby girl handed over to non-governmental organisation

Parents, infants to be tested at Mylapore

SOLACE: Pudukottai Collector D. Uthirakkumaran handing over the baby girl to District Social Welfare Officer Azhaguselvi on Friday..

PUDUKOTTAI: A confusion reportedly caused by the hospital staff of Raniar Government Maternity Hospital here last month over a female child born to an in-patient, has forced the district administration to refer a couple of new-borns and their parents to DNA test in Chennai for scientific assessment of parenthood.

According to hospital sources, Indira (25) and her husband Kannan of Palaivanam village near Aranthangi refused to accept the female child born to them on October 22, as the hospital staff had reportedly informed them that the infant born to them was a male baby.

They were also informed that a male baby was born to another in-patient admitted to the hospital.

Suspecting connivance of the hospital staff in having ‘exchanged’ the infants, the parents refused to take the female child and left it in the care of the hospital.

District Collector D. Uthirakkumaran on Friday handed over the female child to Tiruchi-based non-governmental organisation, Sisters of the Cross – Society for Education Development (SOC-SEAD).

He also christened the baby as ‘Senthamizhselvi’ before handing over it to the Field Worker of SOC-SEAD, Tiruchi, Stella, through District Social Welfare Officer A. Azhaguselvi.

Later, the Collector told presspersons that the hospital staff had been advised to exercise vigil to avoid any misleading information to patients or the parents, especially when two infants are born simultaneously.

The parents of both infants would be referred to DNA test at the Directorate of Forensic Laboratory in Mylapore for scientific assessment of parenthood.

Safe custody

The infant was being handed over to the SOC-SEAD for ensuring its safe custody as an interim arrangement.

If the parents came forward to accept the female child, it would be handed over to them. The Health Department authorities had already tested blood samples of the infants and parents which had been filed.

Health Department sources said that the parents and infants would be sent to Mylapore along with police escort after obtaining an appointment with the Laboratory authorities.
