Malnutrition high among Kolam tribals
Situation in Narnoor mandal severe
132 deaths reported since May
ADILABAD: In order to control health problems, compounded by malnourishment, in agency areas in Adilabad, the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) will extend the food security programme to tribals who are not covered.
Malnutrition has turned out to be culprit in many cases where children have died unable to resist viral fevers and other ailments. The move is in addition to the regular efforts of the ITDA like conducting medical checks and treatment through camps and special teams at places affected by outbreak of fevers.
Collector Ahmad Nadeem told The Hindu on Friday that Kolam tribals would be the focus the food security programme as they were more susceptible to diseases because of rampant malnutrition.District Medical and Health Officer S. Vignanachary deputed additional teams to Narnoor mandal where the condition was severe.
He said 132 deaths, including that of 75 children from Narnoor, Jainoor, Sirpur (U), Utnoor and Indervelli mandals, were reported since May-June. Of these, 20 deaths were attributed each to febrile convulsions and jaundice cases.
