Making a point: Rajasekharan P. Warrier, Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University, speaking at the inaugural function of decennial celebrations of Manipal Institute of Communication in Manipal on Friday. Manipal: Rajasekharan P. Warrier, Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University, said on Friday that journalists should do unbiased reporting. He was speaking at the inaugural function of decennial celebrations of Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC), a constituent of Manipal University, here. Mr. Warrier said that journalists were people with immense courage. When hurricane Katrina hit the State of New Orleans in the U.S. about a couple of years ago, journalists were there on the spot to report on the damage caused. Many students doing journalism aspired to become high flying journalists receiving hefty salaries. Although there was nothing wrong in this, at least a few of them should take up teaching. There is a shortage of good teachers, Mr. Warrier said. M.V. Kamath, chairman of Prasar Bharathi, who is also the honorary director of MIC, said that journalists and students of journalism should have a sense of nationalism. “They should think themselves as Indians first and Indians last. The country has made a lot of progress since Independence ”, he added. Mr. Kamath said that the midnight of August 14, 1947 was the most memorable day of his life. He was reporting the event for the “Free Press Journal” when the midnight hour struck, and the Indian Flag was unfurled, everyone gathered together and wept and clapped simultaneously. The “Free Press Journal” supported Independence for India. The then editor of the journal, Swaminath Sadanand, under whom he worked, had to face problems because of supporting the freedom struggle, Mr. Kamath recalled.
