Nobody is permanent, one comes, one serves, tries to do one’s best, says Musharraf

Nirupama Subramanian

ISLAMABAD: Salman Shah, who was adviser on finance and economics to the former Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz, is the caretaker Finance Minister of Pakistan. The new Foreign Minister is Inam-ul-Haque, a retired career diplomat who was Foreign Secretary and also served in 2002 as the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

The caretaker government is not expected to take any momentous decisions, but will only supervise the parliamentary elections that President Pervez Musharraf said would be held in the first week of 2008, before Jan 9.

General Musharraf told the outgoing government that “nobody is permanent, one comes, one serves, tries to do one’s best in the interests of the nation and then they have to leave.”

Addressing the gathering after the swearing-in, he said that was what a democracy was all about. “That is how a democracy functions,” he said.

The ruling team should take pride in the birth of democracy in Pakistan, General Musharraf said, adding that he had empowered women and the minorities and “liberated” the media. But there were “some teething problems of introducing some responsibility” in the media.
