Lok Sabha panel to let off Ronen Sen
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The Privileges Committee of the Lok Sabha has decided to let off Ambassador to the U.S. Ronen Sen for his reported comments against Members of Parliament on the India-U.S. nuclear deal.
The committee, which met on Friday to finalise its report, took this view following his unqualified and unconditional apology; tendered first through a statement issued a day after his remarks drew Parliament’s ire and then before the privileges committees of both Houses.
The Lok Sabha committee’s report is likely to be presented to Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Monday, after which it will be tabled in the House. The Rajya Sabha committee is expected to meet next week to finalise its report.
Mr. Sen appeared before the Lok Sabha committee on October 29 and during his deposition that lasted 45 minutes he made it clear that he was offering “no excuses” for the kind of language reportedly used by him in an interview to a web-based news agency. He appeared before the Rajya Sabha committee on November 2.
