Guntur MLA’s son beaten up on campus

Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: Campus violence raised its ugly head again on Saturday when a group of senior students at RVR & JC College of Engineering at Chowdavaram near here allegedly beat up Sk. Mujheer, youngest son of Guntur-1 MLA Nambur Sheik Subhani.

Tense moments were witnessed on the college premises as supporters of the MLA gathered outside the college, minutes after the violence. Mujheer, a first year student of Computer Science, was walking towards the library when he was confronted by a group of about 40 senior students, most of them belonging to the EEE group.

Mujheer said in a statement to the police that he was surrounded by the group, thrown to the ground before being gagged with a piece of cloth and assaulted by his seniors. His shirt was torn in the act.

The incident was a spin-off to an earlier one, when a first year student studying EEE, Arif, a friend of Mujheer, was allegedly ragged by his seniors. Mujheer, along with his friends, sought to sort out the issue with his seniors a couple of days ago, when a senior student was allegedly roughed up.

All these events led to Saturday’s incident, the police believe. College Principal Sankara Rao refuted allegations of ragging on the campus and said that the incident was a “minor altercation” between the students.

The Guntur Rural Police recorded the statement of Mujheer and registered an FIR against the accused. Police sources said that Mujheer named three students in the statement. Police were on the look out for the accused.

Under control

Guntur Rural Police led by Inspector of Police K. Jagadeeswara Reddy rushed to the college and brought the situation under control.

Superintendent of Police Mahesh Chandra Laddha said that cases under sections 341, 323, 324, 506 read with section 34 of I.P.C and section (4) of Prevention of Ragging Act were registered.
