Sangareddy: Medak district Collector B. Venkatesam has called upon women to seek help through Self Help groups. Addressing the national legal literacy fortnight organised by the District legal services authority here on Saturday, the Collector said that SHG women were found to face social and family problems better than women in isolation. He wanted them women to start anti-dowry movement in villages. He advised the women to knock the doors of courts only as a last resort and try for reconciliation. He said that even though many laws have been made to protect the rights of women, they need to be aware of the provisions to seek full benefit from the laws. Earlier, District judge K.M. Nagabhushan Rao expressed concern over the decreasing sex ratio in the country. He forecast social turmoil if the current rate of female infanticide continues in the country. He attributed the recent spurt in violence against women to the lopsided sex ratio. He called upon students who attended the meeting to say no to dowry. Superintendent of police R.B. Nayak, citing the existence of child marriages in the district, said that much has to be done to create legal awareness among women.
