Website on Karnataka gets many hits

GULBARGA: The first ever website in a State language, that of Kannada, “Suvarna Karnataka Kannada Antharjala Vahini” devised by the Public Libraries Department in the State has caught the imagination of people. More than 12,000 people have visited the website in the first three months.The site provides information about Karnataka’s history, tradition, language, culture, newspapers, literature, government notifications in the Gazette, cookery, philosophy, education, entertainment and so on.

Director of Public Libraries in the State P.Y. Rajendra Kumar, who was instrumental in designing the website, delivered the keynote address at the “Sensitisation-cum-awareness programme for technology information facilitation” organised by the Department of Science and Industrial Research (DSIR) and the Gulbarga University at the main campus here on Saturday. He said that the website had more than 60 lakh pages and its entertainment page had more than 2,000 films listed. The entertainment page was also interactive, he added.

Mr. Kumar said that a special page has been included in the portal where all the daily Kannada newspapers was available on a day-to-day basis. The general public can log on to the website at www.karnatakapublic

library.gov.in.

Referring to the network of libraries in the State, Mr. Kumar said that Karnataka was one of the few States in the forefront of the public library system in the country.

He said that public libraries in the State had crossed many milestones such as establishing 27 community children’s libraries, establishing a high-tech library at Hampinagar in Bangalore, introduction of e-governance in the Library Department, automation and modernisation, establishment of Library Training Schools in four centres and conversion of important Kannada books into Braille.

Mr Kumar said that there were 3,122 public libraries functioning in different parts of the State. Gulbarga district had the highest number of libraries with 238 libraries, followed by Kolar with 198 libraries, Belgaum with 183 libraries, Bangalore Rural 143, Bangalore Urban with 112 libraries , Bangalore city with 76 libraries, Davangere with 136 libraries, Hassan with 120 libraries, Tumkur with 155 libraries, Mysore with 146 libraries and Shimoga with 126 libraries.
