Inauguration: Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University B.G. Mulimani and Registrar of the CIEFL T.A.V. Murthy (right) at Gulbarga University on Saturday. GULBARGA: T.A.V. Murthy, member of the Knowledge Commission and former Director of Information Library Network (INFLIBNET) came out in support of the establishment of the regional centre of INFLIBNET in Gulbarga University on Saturday. He said that the university had all the facilities. Inaugurating the one-day “Sensitisation-cum-awareness programme for technology information facilitation” organised by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) and Gulbarga University in the campus of the university, Mr. Murthy, who is also the Registrar of the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) in Hyderabad, said that during his tenure at INFLIBNET he had mooted the idea of establishing the regional centre of INFLIBNET at Gulbarga University. He said that Gulbarga University had a special place and paid glowing tributes to the Gulbarga University librarian Ravi Gaddagimath for developing one of the most modern libraries of the country. Mr. Murthy said that the Mohd Iqbal Library at Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir was the best and the second best was the library in Gulbarga University. Complimenting the DSIR for selecting Gulbarga University as the venue for organising the programme, Mr. Murthy said that Gulbarga University was the second university in Karnataka, after Bangalore, to host such a programme. Mr. Murthy said that holding such programmes in remote and backward regions would help in reducing regional imbalance and boost research and development activities in the scientific and industrial sector. He said that young entrepreneurs would benefit largely by the programme. The DSIR should also come forward to provide necessary financial and technical support for research and development activities in the region, he added. Adviser and senior scientist of the DSIR Sridevi Ravindran in her address said that the economic development of a nation in the present competitive global environment depended solely on its ability to understand the dynamics of knowledge. She added that it also depended on creating a true knowledge society which used knowledge as a powerful tool for societal transformation in order to create economic wealth and social good. She said that the mandate of the DSIR was to drive industrial research, focus on technology promotion, development utilisation and transfer. Referring to the Technology Information Facilitation programme, Ms. Ravindran said that it helped in facilitating better dissemination of scientific information, supporting production of local content and promotion of indigenous knowledge, supporting education, training, and research and development in digital content development and utilisation and promotion of the emergence of an information industry in science and technology. B.G. Mulimani, Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University presided and Registrar Pratap Singh Tiwari welcomed the gathering. Librarian Ravi Gaddagimath made the introductory remarks. More than 200 delegates from all the country participated in the programme.
