Group firm on UT status for Karaikal

KARAIKAL: The Karaikal Struggle Group, that is fighting for separate Union Territory status for Karaikal region, has demanded separate UT status for Karaikal region by incorporating Mahe and Yanam regions.

S.P. Selvashanmugham, lawyer and convener of the group, said in a statement on Saturday said that Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy had on Friday insisted at a function that the time was right for the Centre to confer Statehood for Puducherry.

Mr. Selvashanmugham said that in the last five decades, Puducherry administration had created regional imbalances among its four territories of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam and made Karaikal region the most backward among the four territories. Hence, the people of Karaikal are now demanding separate UT status, he said.
