Oulgaret Municipality to create a dog shelter

Staff Reporter

For conducting birth control operations and post-operative care for stray animals

PUDUCHERRY: The Oulgaret Municipality has decided to create a dog shelter to conduct birth control operations and to provide post operative care for stray animals.

In a joint meeting of Animal Husbandry Department, Oulgaret Municipality, Rajiv Gandhi Veterinary Science College and Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) held here on Friday, it was decided to take immediate steps to control the dog menace in the areas that fell within its limits.

According to a press release, the municipality would hand over the job of conducting operations and providing post-operative care to the SPCA. Chairman of the municipality N.S.J. Jayapal said the local body also planned to introduce licence for pet dogs kept at homes.

Municipal Commissioner A. Selvaraj, Public Health Department’s Deputy Director Naidu, Joint Director of Animal Husbandry Santhamoorthy, Superintendent of Police (South) Kandanadhan and SPCA president M.K. Sayeekumari participated in the meeting.

Ms. Sayeekumari said the SPCA had been performing such operations on stray dogs for the past couple of years but lack of space for post-operative care was a major hurdle. “We have eight cages on the Animal Welfare Board premises. Both the Puducherry and Oulgaret Municipalities have been clamouring for putting an end to the dog menace. If anything is to be done on a large-scale, the Society needs at least two acres of land. Even if someone can give it on lease for a couple of years, the dog menace will reduce considerably,” she said.
