TNHB’s unoccupied houses turn haven for anti-social elements

SATHYAMANGALAM: There is a row of houses without doors, which standout against the other houses in the Kenjanur Housing Unit in Ikkarai Negamam panchayat, near here.

The houses are without windows as well. It is not that the residents of those houses feel secured about the absence of doors or windows. In fact, there are no residents. The houses have been without residents since construction in 1995 by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board, which also owns those houses.

Sold

The absence of doors and windows is the handiwork of anti-social elements, who seem to have sold them to lift their spirits. The elements did not stop with the doors and windows alone; they have also laid their hands on the electric connections. For, none of the houses have the wiring intact. Even the switchboards have not been spared.

If the condition of the house is bad inside, it is worse outside. Thorny bushes have covered a good portion of the houses, providing a perfect place for the elements to turn it into a bar. The bushes only give the necessary cover. Used water packets, plastic tumblers and pickle covers speak volumes of how the place has been put to use. Just outside the windows are empty liquor bottles.

Residents of the area say there are seven ‘L’ type houses and five ‘M’ type houses that are unoccupied. They want the TNHB to clear the bushes and prevent anti-social elements from misusing them.

“The TNHB should do something about the houses, as anti-social elements are running it. Such abuse affects residents of the area like us,” complains S. Ramachandran, a resident.
