CHENNAI: The Chennai-based $10 million closely-held Data Patterns (India) Private Ltd., which specialises in the development and manufacture of electronic systems for the defence and aerospace applications, has initialled a memorandum of understanding with $20.3 billon Raytheon Company, a technology leader specialising in defence, homeland security and other government markets throughout the world. The MoU will help Data Patterns to participate in the medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) programme of the Union Ministry of Defence. Raytheon is a Tier-I vendor to Lockheed and Boeing. Many big names are bidding for the multi-billion Indian defence project. Under an ‘offset’ clause, a specified portion of the job has to be sourced from within India. Raytheon provides state-of-the-art electronics, mission systems integration and other capabilities in the areas of sensing, effects, command, control, communications and intelligence systems, as well as a broad range of mission support services. Data Patterns, according to R. Soundararajan, Vice-President (Marketing), is focussed on onboard electronics and ground support systems. It has been a supplier to well-known Indian entities such as BEL, HAL and DRDO labs. The company has a state-of-the-art facility at the Siruseri IT Park here. It has around 400 employees. Mr. Soundararajan indicated that Data Patterns would enter into similar MoUs with other leading Tier-I vendors so as to step up its participation in the defence procurement projects.
