HUBLI: V.S. Malimath, former Chief Justice of High Courts of Karnataka and Kerala, has said that organisations and government departments should have vigilant attitude to ensure good governance. He was speaking after inaugurating a workshop on “Probity in professional dealings” organised by the vigilance branch of South Western Railway here on Friday as part of eighth Vigilance Awareness Week. He said there was no point in punishing those working in the lower cadre of an organisation, if no step was taken to prevent corruption at the higher level. Inspiration, idealism, commitment, character building and motivation would yield good results in any organisation, he added. He said compared to other government undertakings, the level of corruption in the Railways was low. However, people expected a lot from it and functioning in an ideal way was most important to the Railways. Being a service-oriented organisation, the Railways should focus on probity in professional dealings by maintaining efficiency, courtesy, cleanliness and qualitative services to the people. Mr. Malimath hoped that Vigilance Awareness Week would help in promoting vigilance consciousness among the railway employees. Praveen Kumar, General Manager of South Western Railway, said in the 10th Five-Year Plan, the Railways had development projects worth Rs. 18,000 crore and the growth of traffic would increase in the next five years. There was a need for major steps to improve the working system efficiently.
