Opportunities for all

Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE: Open Schooling is all about extending education to all, Director, National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), K.R.Chandrasekhar, New Delhi, said here on Saturday.

Distributing certificates to the students who have completed Class VIII through the open schooling system at the Avinashilingam Jan Shikshan Sansthan, he said it did not believe in compartmentalising education. Giving an opportunity to those people who had missed the chance to further their education was what open schooling was all about.

Avinashilingam Jan Shikshan Sansthan had got the sanction from NIOS for conducting secondary and higher secondary education in addition to vocational courses. Basically aimed at students who could not cope with the general system of education, open schooling offered a choice of subjects they wished to study. Students could choose what they wanted to study and avoid what they did not want to. “There are no rigid combinations in this system,” Mr.Chandrasekhar said. The students could choose any five subjects out of 30.

In States such as Tamil Nadu, more women had benefited from this open system especially, those who had dropped out of school and had not been able to continue education. However, not many people were aware of the concept of open schooling in the State, he said.

Educational material was given in print, audio, and electronic format. All the material was put up on the Internet too. The curriculum emphasised application-oriented education.
