Lawyers concerned over deputation of judges

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: Lawyers practising in the Madras High Court Bench here are concerned over the posting of Judges on a rotation basis for a short duration of eight weeks. The advocates insisted that Judges, drawn from the principal seat of the Court in Chennai, should stay here for at least a year.

“A majority of lawyers feel that if the Judges who were elevated from the Madras Bar are unwilling to come to Madurai, then experienced lawyers practising here should be elevated and posted in the Bench,” said Isaac Mohanlal, president, Madurai Bench of Madras High Court Bar Association (MMBA). A joint extraordinary General Body meeting of Madurai Bench High Court Advocates Association (MBHAA) and MMBA held here on Friday resolved to send a delegation of lawyers to meet the Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah in Chennai and air their grievances, said Ajmal Khan, president, MBHAA.

One of the agenda of the meeting was to press for implementation of a 3:1 ratio between the Judges elevated from the Bar and the service judges (those elevated from the lower judiciary) while posting judges for the Bench. At present there are seven service judges here out of the total strength of eleven judges. He said that there was also a problem with the court staff sent here on deputation for a period of one year.

“Lawyers complained that most of the staff members went on long leave. We will take up this issue with the Chief Justice,” he added.
