Municipal vice-chairman hacked to death

Armed gang intercepted his vehicle at Thimmavaram


His associate, Arumugham, was also killed; three others were injured

Police pickets posted in town, shopkeepers shut establishments


CHENGALPATTU: Chengalpattu Municipality vice-chairman M. Kumar of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was hacked to death in his vehicle by an armed gang at Thimmavaram village near here on Saturday morning.

His associate Arumugham was also killed. According to the police, the assailants, who came in a car without numberplates, intercepted Kumar’s vehicle around 11 a.m. and attacked him and the other occupants with lethal weapons.

While Kumar and Arumugham died on the spot, another person, Sasi, was seriously injured.

He was referred to the Government General Hospital, Chennai from the Chengalpattu Medical College Hospital.

Two others, Umapathi and Ansari, sustained injuries and were admitted to CMC hospital. Car driver Inba escaped with minor injuries.

Tension in town

As news about the murder reached the town, shopkeepers shut their establishments and tension prevailed for some time.

Normalcy was restored after police pickets were posted at sensitive points.

Superintendent of Police K. Periaiya told reporters that four special parties had been formed to probe the murder.

Special Correspondent from Chennai reports:

AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa condemned the killings.

Conveying her condolences, she announced that Rs.50,000 would be given on behalf of the party to each of the bereaved families.

She also said Rs.15,000 would be given for the treatment of Sasi.

In a statement here, she said action should be taken against those responsible for the murders.
