WELL DONE: Mumbai’s Ramesh Powar is congratulated by his teammates after dismissing Tamil Nadu’s Yomahesh in Chennai on Saturday.

CHENNAI: Mumbai wrapped up an eight-wicket win with a day to spare in its second round Ranji Trophy Super league cricket match against Tamil Nadu here at the ICL-Guru Nanak ground on Saturday.

Prashant Naik hit his sixth six off the day’s last scheduled ball to muscle Mumbai to the target of 104. The win, set up by the efforts of Ramesh Powar (five for 68) and Aavishkar Salvi (three for 27), gave the defending champion five points.

Mumbai, however, couldn’t log a bonus point: left-arm spinner R. Ramkumar dismissed Wasim Jaffer, caught close in, to deny the visitor a 10-wicket win. Ramkumar then bowled Ajinkya Rahane for his sixth wicket of the match. But, Naik ensured there were no further alarms, racing to 57 in 42 balls.

Powar and Salvi had earlier combined to bowl Tamil Nadu out for 214 in its second innings.

Dream session

Mumbai had a dream first session, picking five wickets. Agarkar broke through in the second ball of the day, castling Dinesh Karthik.

Night-watchman Yomahesh and captain S. Badrinath put a period of anxious running between the wickets behind them to add a solid 45 for the third wicket.

Against the run of play, Yomahesh played on to Powar, the ball slipping off bat face onto stumps.

Salvi demonstrated the benefits of an accurate line on a strip of indifferent bounce, bowling Badrinath (32) and R. Srinivasan. In between, Powar had R. Prasanna leg-before — the left-hander ill-advisedly offering no stroke.

At 98 for six before lunch, Tamil Nadu — still 13 behind — was in danger of losing by tea.

But, K. Shri Vasudeva Das and R. Ashwin resisted stoutly. Ashwin, with his loose wrists and positive intent, made 51 (93b, 8x4); the left-handed Vasudeva Das showed decisive footwork in scoring 47 (91b, 5x4, 1x6).

Their 91-run partnership — which, at one stage, raised thoughts of Mumbai being forced to chase 180 on a wearing wicket — ended when Vasudeva Das shouldered arms to Salvi. It was a lapse in concentration, the kind that plagued Tamil Nadu through the match.

Ashwin was then found short of his crease at the non-striker’s end by Salvi’s direct hit from backward point.

Perhaps, Ramkumar’s looseness at the other end, with tea imminent, contributed to the mix up; whatever the reason, it was a wicket Tamil Nadu could ill-afford to lose. Soon, Powar polished off the tail for match figures of nine for123.
