Water to be supplied for entire ayacut

Officials asked to prepare plans for medium irrigation

Bhpatipalem project to be completed by August next year


Kakinada: The District Irrigation Advisory Board meeting held here on Sunday resolved to supply water to the entire ayacut under the Godavari delta and Yeleru canal for the Rabi season. Presiding over the meeting, District Collector M Subramanyam said 71.65 tmcft of water was available for use at Dowleswaram barrage, drawn from a total flow of 2,314 tmcft in the Godavari River between July and September of this year.

The availability of water from Sileru was 32.12 tmcft, taking the total net quantity of water to 103.77 tmcft. A total of 10,13,161 acres could be irrigated under east, central and western deltas in East and West Godavari districts. Accordingly, the advisory board has ordered the supply mechanism to be put in place at the earliest.

With regard to medium irrigation, the officials have been asked to look into the water availability factor and draft necessary plans in time for the Rabi season. About 0.45 tmcft water is available in Subbareddisagar reservoir. The Maddigadda and Pampa reservoirs have no water.

Ministers Jakkampudi Rammohan Rao, Gollapalli Surya Rao and Pilli Subhas Chandra Bose ordered the Bhupatipalem project to be completed by the end of August next year. Similarly, the pending works of Musurumilli project have to be completed by April. Irrigation Department Superintending Engineer (Construction wing) Ravindrababu explained that the Pushkar lift scheme had already catered to 33,000 acres through the first lift. By next Kharif, it will provide irrigation facility to more than 93,000 acres. The second lift has been targeted to be completed by July 2008.

Modernisation

Superintending Engineer KVSLN Raju said the modernisation of Godavari delta and Yeleru canal and strengthening of the flood banks proposed to be taken at a total cost of Rs 2,300 crore.
