BERHAMPUR: The national convention of Indian Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and Technologists (IAPST) was held at Gopalpur on Sunday. Ambika C. Banerjee, advisor of East India Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Kolkata, inaugurated the convention. Vice-Chancellor of BPUT Omkar Nath Mohanty, MLA of Berhampur R.C.C. Patnaik, Gopalpur MLA Trinath Behera attended the convention as guests. A.K. Bandopadhyay of Jadavpur University was honoured with IAPST award 2007 for his contribution to research in developing advanced drug delivery systems. P.N. Murthy, Director of Royal College of Pharmacy, was also honoured for his work in the field of pharmaceutical research and education. The experts attending the convention were of the opinion that the challenges of advancement of pharmaceutical research in India had increased due to globalisation and new patent laws. According to them, latest trends in all fields of science were now having their role in the development of health and therapeutic products. Emerging areaAddressing the convention, Mr. Mohanty saw need for interdisciplinary approach in pharmaceutical research to meet new challenges in the field. He cited the example of nanotechnology, which, within a few years, had become a major tool of pharmaceutical research to develop new drugs and to increase potency of existing drugs. Mr. Banerjee called upon the scientists and R&D wings of pharma industries to include more research in the field of biotechnology, nanotechnology and bio-nanotechnology. “Our next target should be genetic diseases,” he said.
