BELLARY: Work on the Rs. 18.92 crore drinking water project for Sandur

will commence soon, executive engineer of the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board D.L. Raju has said.

Speaking to The Hindu here on Saturday, Mr. Raju said the process of inviting tenders had been completed. The drinking water project, for which former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy had laid the foundation stone, was meant to supply water to Sandur town, the NMDC in Donimalai and eight villages in the region.

Water would be drawn from the high-level canal of the Tungabhadra reservoir near Toranagal and stored in the Narihalla Dam near Taranagar.

Recipient areas

From there, the treated water would be supplied to Nagalapur, Talur, Bannihatti, Gangalapur, Taranagar, Murari Nagar, Bhujanganagar, Krishna Nagar, the NMDC and Sandur town.

The NMDC had agreed to give Rs. 12.3 crore for the project and the

Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj would contribute Rs. 95 lakh, he said. The remaining funds would be given by the State Government.

Drainage pipes

Mr. Raju said that laying of underground drainage pipes at Hadagali and in the extension area of Bellary city had been approved by the Government and would be taken up soon. The State Government had already released one-third of the total project costs, he said.
